Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Overview:
Design, Display
Of the two watch35705es in Samsung’s flagship smartwatch lineup for 2021, Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 sports a more sporty look. It doesn’t have the rotating bezel of its Classic sibling, which allows it to have a more compact form factor despite featuring the same display size options. Furthermore, the watch cases are made of Aluminum instead of stainless steel.
Available in 40 and 44mm case sizes, the case itself is made of stainless steel. Both options can be fitted with a 20mm (universal) strap.
In terms of durability, the watch is 5 ATM water-resistant and IP68 certified against dust and water damage. Moreover, it has passed MIL-STD-810G tests for durability against extreme temperatures, shock, vibration, dust, and humidity. The Galaxy Watch 4 Classic 40mm and 44mm weigh 25.9 and 30.3 grams, respectively.
Getting to the display, you’re looking at either a 1.2 or a 1.4″ Super AMOLED panel protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass DX+. For navigation, there are two customizable buttons on the side. These buttons are also used to take “Body Composition” readings.
Health, Fitness Tracking
Using something called a 3-in-1 BioActive sensor, the Watch 4 can measure your body fat, skeletal muscle, body water, and Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). Apart from this, it can monitor your heart rate, sleep, stress, and blood oxygen (SpO2) levels. Complementing the sleep tracking feature, this smartwatch can detect your snoring as well.
It also supports blood pressure and ECG measurement but this feature is exclusive to select regions only. Moreover, the Watch 4 can record 95 types of workouts like walking, running, hiking, swimming, and more. As expected, there’s built-in GPS too, which means you can trail your workout routes without needing a smartphone.
Performance
Powering the Galaxy Watch 4 is Samsung’s own Exynos W920 processor. Built on a more power-efficient 5nm process node, this processor has a 20% more powerful CPU and 10x more powerful GPU compared to the Exynos 9110 in last year’s Watch 3 and Watch Active 2. This has been complemented by 1.5GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage.
On the software side of things, the Watch 4 runs on Wear OS (with One UI Watch 3 on top) instead of the company’s own Tizen OS that we’ve seen in previous Galaxy watches. Like the flagship Galaxy S22 series and some of the recent Galaxy A smartphones, the Watch 4 is also slated to receive 4 years of Wear OS and One UI Watch updates.
